The Library lures patrons to linger in its atmospheric, old-world lounge. Dark wooden bookcases house novels, knick-knacks, picture frames, and newspaper racks with periodicals from around the world. Backgammon and checkerboards are carved into the wooden tabletops. A mural of Central Park scrolls around the perimeter and framed paintings of bucolic city scenes dot the walls. There are plush sofas for lolling about, deep leather chairs to sink into, and a discreet banquette for simultaneous dining and cuddling. The crowd is a mix of hotel guests, couples and clusters of friends, with no one in a rush to go anywhere. Soft jazz drifts through the room while a muted sports game plays on the unobtrusive flat-screen TVs. A quick flip through the leather-bound-book menu reveals a limited, steep selection: mustard-glazed wild salmon, cavatappi pasta with pancetta, chanterelles, asparagus and truffle butter, creamy cheesecake with fresh raspberries and vanilla. Though the entrees satisfy, the atmosphere is the real draw. And you can soak it up for a lot less if you stop in for tea, a drink, dessert, or spoonfuls of the M&Ms in bowls scattered throughout the room.
