This all-natural bakery supplies fresh counter fare to area coffee shops like Prospect Perk, La Petite Café, and Root Hill Café, and opened its own retail space (and coffeehouse) on the South Slope in 2009. Baked goods are exceptional, plus coffee is fair trade, but don't expect to linger and socialize; seating is limited to a single wraparound windowsill/bench with a view into the roomy kitchen and action around the ovens. While cookies are a specialty, Little Buddy boasts a surprisingly varied menu. For breakfast and snacking, there are crisp, crumbling scones, multigrain muffins, and a tender cheese-pepper biscuit. On the lunch side, premade sandwiches complement several house soups, with seasonal surprises like a piquant red chili packed with beef (an ideal match for cheddar jalapeño cornbread). There's a reason Little Buddy made its name in sugar: The dense peanut-butter cookies flaunt chunks of peanuts, the brownie concentrates a maximum amount of cocoa per square, and the chocolate-chunk cookie manages a crisp outer layer while retaining a gooey inner crumb. Inventive varieties abound; small batches and gift boxes are a must for area parties.
