Profile

Just across the street from the gleaming 86th Street subway station, Little Frog serves contemporary French cuisine with a come-as-you-are-ambiance. Diners can be found any night of the week sharing a drink with the owner while enjoying the memorable menu from a Minetta Tavern alum. Traditional touches like dark leather banquettes and large tilted mirrors are mixed with a few vibrant touches — a bright-blue wooden bar and Moroccan tiles — gives it a chic, slightly bohemian feel. The menu is well executed, though it definitely caters to carnivores; vegetarians can pick from several small veggie plates and of course the usual onion soup with a thick layer of Gruyère on top. The traditional stuff is good, but the contemporary bistro fare is better — the grilled octopus is served on a salad accented by celery and an olive tapenade, the coq au vin is made with the more flavorful dark meat, and the salmon is plated over a bed of lentils with an aged balsamic reduction.
