Profile

It feels good to eat at Local 92: Not only are the grain salads like the spritely tabbouleh and nutty quinoa delightfully light and flavorful, but the heavier dishes like the shakshuka—eggs poached in tomato sauce served in a cast-iron pan with fresh-baked challah—don’t overwhelm. And if the hummus platters (there are nine to choose from, from mushroom to beef to classic) don’t dazzle, you’ll enjoy the rest of the well-executed menu and appreciate the restaurant’s dedication to local ingredients and its role in the community (leftovers are given to the needy). The décor is East Village standard—copper ceiling, Edison bulbs—with one twist: The lights, menu stand, and wine buckets are made from repurposed kitchen instruments. It’s a smart touch that reinforces the proprietors’ awareness of recycling. Sitting on Local 92’s sidewalk patio, bordered by planters of fresh basil and other herbs, is as relaxing as an afternoon on your very own rooftop. But with better food.
