If there is such a thing as the archetypical neighborhood place, Louie's Westside Café is it. Since 1986, Louie's, with it's high ceilings, comfortable airy dining room with big windows overlooking Amsterdam Avenue, has been pulling in a loyal, artsy mature Upper West Side clientele seeking refuge from the frat house-oriented bars and trendy restaurants that dominate the neighborhood. The menu—variations on comfort American food paired with numerous Mediterranean options—hasn’t changed much over the years. There would be too much disappointment among customers if the meatloaf, or grilled hanger steak with onion rings suddenly disappeared from the dinner menu. Though the food at Louie’s is not exceptional, it’s reliable—good enough to keep the faithful coming back. It’s more comfortable and less hectic than nearby coffee shops for breakfast, but it is the Upper West Side, after all, so brunch is expectably precious and popular. You may even have to wait for a table, but, well, that’s the masochistic see-me appeal of brunch on the Upper West Side.
Grilled hanger steak, $19; meatloaf, $16
