Profile

Infatuated by all things Italian—but especially the men’s-shirts shops called camicerie—the owners of Lugo Menswear in Nolita have expanded their brand (“Lugo Tailored Lifestyle”) with an Italian restaurant opposite Madison Square Garden. The 150-seat spot has replaced their previous foray into food, Tupelo Grill, but chef Greg Lombardi has stayed on to convert the steaks-and-chops menu into one that celebrates, as the newly installed sign over the bar advertises, la dolce vita. Selections now include fried artichokes with lemon aïoli, the increasingly popular clam pizza (see “Out of Their Shells,”), and fettuccini with prosciutto and wild mushrooms, plus such steakhouse vestiges as the New York strip and a $72 porterhouse “Fiorentina” for two. Italian wines are available by the glass and the half or full bottle, and—surprise!—the staff has been outfitted in shirts and ties from Lugo’s collection.

I went to Lugo Caffe with a group of people for a celebratory lunch. I wanted chicken parm but because it was so hot outside I ended up getting the caprese salad with grilled chicken and it was a good decision on my part. I thought having grilled chicken would mean a few pieces scattered on top of the salad, but instead they covered my plate with the chicken and put the caprese salad on top. Definitely a nice surprise. Someone else at the table ordered the veal and the piece I had was simply amazing. For dessert, I had gelatto and I wouldn't get it again--nothing special about it. In any case, the main dishes were great and I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu.

Ate here for lunch recently with friends from work. All 3 of us got sick afterwards. Knocking each other over as we run for the bathroom sick. Food was overpriced and rancid. I spoke with the manager the next day and he was rude and arrogant about the whole thing. He basicly told me that it was absolutely impossible that food from his restuarant could make anyone sick. I knew he was totally full of it when he said that Lugo's ownership manages 10 restaurants and my complaint was their first ever. My advice- stay away!
