It’s back to school at this basement hookah lounge, set right in NYU’s backyard. The location draws every clique, and based on some of the policies, it clearly knows exactly who its patrons are. There’s a $10 minimum on Friday and Saturday nights after 8 p.m.; a separate bar menu pushes nachos and mozzarella sticks; and an 18% tip is automatically added for the waitresses. The kids don’t seem to mind the rundown atmosphere—worn stools and cushions, peeling paint—because the joint appeals to everyone in the class. Stoners find a good substitute in the shisha selection (30 in all; the rose is nicely light on the lungs); jocks appreciate that the game is on one of the TVs; club kids dig the loud music, from Reggaeton to disco; and budding foodies find a full, tastily healthful menu of Moroccan specialties. The Luxor combo, a platter of creamy hummus, babaganoush, crispy tabouleh salad, and spicy falafel will feed the whole study group. The generously seasoned ground beef and lamb kofte kebab and a flaky baklava add sustenance after a couple of the large, fruity martinis.
