Profile

Strong tequila drinks like the ones found at Mamá's make any meal seem like a party, no matter what the surroundings. At the midtown location, your party-in-a-glass contrasts with the sober, elegant decor. At the uptown outpost, though, every day is Cinco de Mayo. Bright tiles dot the floors, murals cover the walls and a mariachi band entertains happy crowds of all ages. No one will hassle you about your noisy kids, so sip oversize margaritas to your heart’s content. The exuberance of the diners is not due solely to the food, which is decent and copious but hardly ruckus rousing. Both locations offer essentially the same menu, (although the prices in midtown are 10-20% higher) which includes a range of American-style favorites, like heaping skillets of steamy fajitas, as well as reasonably authentic Mexican fare, like cheesy chile rellenos, marinated rack of lamb and daily fish specials. Refried beans taste not only refried but reheated, although you can console yourself with a soft, oniony guacamole made fresh at your table. But after a drink or two you'll forget all about the food and join the party.

Live Music

Mariachi bands play Tuesday through Thursday 7 p.m. to midnight and from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Friend B has been swearing that Mama bests Rosa, so Friend A and I went to decide for ourselves. The verdict: depends upon what you want out of your Mexican restaurant. Mama Mexico is a noisy, pinata-colored fiesta, offering friendly, attentive service; a Mariachi band; and an (almost) overwhelming number of menu items, from its zillion enchilada platters to its desserts. Friend A and I downed a pitcher of red wine sangria between us--smooth and refreshing. She had La Cena de Mama; I had the enchilada special (beef, chicken, shrimp, with red, mole, and green sauces). Heavy and messy and perfect for sangria-absorption. The tres leches cake was lovely, with the perfect ratio of whipped cream to cake. The star of the night was the guacamole, and here is why: it tasted like (good) Ameri-Mexican food of old, before Rosa went Whole Foods on it. So which restaurant is better? If you are looking for food to have with your sangria, and a place to catch up with a friend without having to take yourself seriously, choose Mama. If you are looking, first and foremost, for a good, proper meal, choose Rosa. I choose both.
