Profile

The crowd is lively at this Washington Heights tapas spot, which also plays host to live music on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Stools are placed around high-top tables lined up near the bar, leaving the space to teeter the line between crowded and cozy. Many customers come just to drink and begin a night out, but the food is absolutely worth the trip. The menu is in Spanglish, and it includes a charcuterie selection of three meats (dry-cured Spanish ham, pork shoulder, and pork sausage), and croquettes such as the Hongo Con Cheddar, with mixed wild mushrooms, rosemary and thyme, and a mildly spicy aïoli. The menu features a few full entrees like red snapper and chicken with rice, but focus clearly rests on the tapas, of which the seafood items are the best. The floured rock shrimp of the Shrimp Crujientes have all the crunch of a fried dish, but are significantly lighter. Dip the medium-size prawns in a tangy paprika aïoli, a sauce that you’ll also find atop the slightly more batter-heavy Calamari Crujientes. Finish with a traditional dessert like the flan, or for something more adventurous, the tapioca—it comes with strawberry marmalade and Yucca caviar.
