Profile

The team behind Southern-inspired Brooklyn favorites Smoke Joint and Peaches opened Marietta in the long and skinny former Dakar space in spring 2013. Start with a tart Gran Classico cocktail—made with bourbon and pear liquer—in the airy and buzzy barroom up front. Families and groups are often there, sharing small plates and charcuterie-style snacks like Tennessee brown jam, a savory smoked pork terrine served in a tiny Mason jar. Other standout starters include the delicate fried green tomatoes, which arrive lightly breaded next to charred Vidalia onions under a squirt of house-made “comeback sauce”—get it? cause you’ll be “comin’ back” for it?—and the crunchy, seasonal salads, like a recent tangle of endive and watercress accented by a salt cod vinaigrette. You can have a quieter dinner in the pretty corner backroom, where entrées like oxtail and slow-roasted pork shank hold up against Southern-fried classics like honey-brined chicken and a crispy whiting sandwich. Dessert will probably be an after-thought, but the short list is as rich as it comes; if you’ve saved room, opt for the delicate butterscotch pudding, as dense and smooth as any pot de crème.

Recommended Dishes

Tennessee brown jam, $6; fried green tomatoes, $9; Memphis fried chicken, $13; butterscotch pudding, $6
