Profile
This is one of those mannered, dainty West Village restaurants that seem to send a certain type of discerning female diner into paroxysms of delight. The room is small and beautifully appointed, and the talented Bouley-trained chef, Galen Zamarra, turns out delicious high-organic recipes like steamed-razor-clam chowder, and squab baked in little pots of clay. — Adam Platt
I was on this date with a fabulous woman whose company I enjoy. I choose Mas for attentive, discreet service in an atmosphere conducive to a private, shared experience between two people. Mas did not disappoint. The food was exquisite, delicate, nuanced - a wonderful accent and backdrop to a conversation. I confess, I was more interested in my partner than the food, yet the food was undeniably the star. We both went for the six course chef menu. The food was faultless, my lone cocktail was weak but all the better to appreciate the food and conversation. The dining room in which we sat was in the back, tasteful, low key, organic but sophisticated - it almost suggests something more nordic than French. Obviously dining at Mas is for the well heeled or those of us who indulge ourselves from "des temps en temps".
Not only did they call and move my reservation at the last minute and had the nerve to "blame" it on me, but I also found a tasty nail in my food. Besides being stuffy, pretentious and rude, I think I'll pass on recommending this restaurant to friends and family. Oh right... I also bit into a metal shard during my Entree. Steer clear of this place.
