Like a hot but disappointing date, Maxie boasts an alluring exterior, then falls flat when it's time to deliver the goods. All glossy surfaces and dark finishes, the high-ceilinged, bi-level space is anchored by poured-concrete floors and a wall of outsize wood panels. With chefs in the back kitchen and no sushi counter, the dining room's showpiece is its angled, varnished bar, where after-work singles and neighborhood solos sample a full dinner menu or drinks. They’re better off with the latter. Maki rolls are heavy on rice; smoked-salmon avocado salad tastes weirdly metallic; even toriwasa—chicken with parsley and horseradish sauce—is underseasoned. Perhaps mindful of the food, black-clad servers are gravely professional, rarely cracking smiles. But considering the hard surfaces here, acoustics are surprisingly pleasant; for even more quiet, you can head for a curved beige-and-grey banquette in back. Maxie shares its ownership, along with its design sensibility, with Butai, the high-design robata grill in Gramercy Park.
