With chandeliers that look like molecular sculptures and a snazzy marble-topped bar with a gleaming brass rail underfoot, the debonair interior of Maxwell’s Chophouse teleports you back at least 60 years. As does the traditional steakhouse menu: The almost by-the-book culinary lineup includes appetizers like French onion soup, shrimp cocktail, and shucked oysters followed by entrées like chicken paillard, a New York strip, and porterhouse for two with classic sides like creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. To get in the retro spirit, order fish on Fridays — the ahi tuna is timelessly good. For those itching for a taste of contemporaneity, there’s a veggie burger. But like everything else here, it’s going to cost you a pretty penny.

Toasting the Wine List

If there’s a wine for every occasion, then Maxwell’s probably has one to suit your needs — the wine list runs to well over 500 bottles.
