Profile

Everything from the upright piano to the banker's desk lamps lining the booths is a throwback to the old-school forties businessman. The bar, booths, and smoke-stained mirrors are from the original Joe Maxwell's, and while the bar boasts three wide-screen televisions and 25 seats, the sectioned-off dining area is quiet and intimate. Granted, the music sounds like the bartender's iTunes on shuffle (Americana, Lady Gaga, rave, country), but the post-depression, candlelit vibe and the stiff drinks effectively take off the after-work edge. Skip the macaroni and cheese, overdone and overrated, and opt for true, untrendy American classics. The chili, served steaming hot in a miniature casserole bowl, is homey and filling, a necessity for rainy days. The rib eye comes slathered in a slightly sweet sauce, tasty but forgettable. And the BBQ pulled pork sandwich is everything it needs to be; it may not be Blue Smoke, but it gets the job done.
