May Kaidee falls somewhere in between the generic low end (think KFC) and the fancy high end (like Ginza Onodera) of international restaurant chains. It’s the first American location of a Thai brand encompassing restaurants, spas, and culinary schools in Thailand and Cambodia. With its hodgepodge of wooden chairs and colorful, mismatched tablecloths, the two-floor shoebox of a space is like the quirky canteen of an inclusive community center that you didn’t even know you were looking for. To that end, May Kaidee offers cooking classes and movie nights along with exemplary Thai vegetarian/vegan dishes. With dishes like a decidedly non-greasy pad Thai, an improbably meaty vegetarian sausage, and massaman curry (which really should be listed with one fireball on the menu,) the kitchen makes a strong sell for those classes. Or you could just buy the cookbook.
