Profile

A single red door divides May Wah Pork Chop Fast Food in two. Eastward is a sky-blue, wood paneled bubble-tea-shop-turned-dining-area where friendly waitresses deliver dishes in plastic boxes. To the west, a sliver of real estate is dedicated to the cramped kitchen where pork chops and chicken legs are pan-fried to crisp perfection, stacked atop layers of pickled Chinese cabbage and rice and quickly doled out in plastic take-out boxes.  The ground pork sauce is made from stewed pork bone (and a myriad of ingredients known only by the owner) and it adds a creamy umami touch to occasionally dry chop and crackly chicken leg. One ingredient worth knowing about is the hot chili oil, available tableside, which gives great depth to a refreshing beef noodle soup. Though pork chop may be May Wah’s claim to fame in Taiwan, Stateside, the shop’s swine-less dishes deserve a shout-out too.
