Cantonese noodle shops are designed to be places where you stop for a quick bite, and in the spirit of things, there's nothing about Mee Noodle Shop and Grill that encourages you to linger. The black tabletops are so worn that no matter how clean they still feel scruffy, and the tables are squeezed so tightly together you can practically taste what's on your neighbors' plates. But if you want fast, straightforward, and satisfying Cantonese, similar to what you'll find in Chinatown, this is the place to be. The Cantonese style soups—the best items on the menu—allow plenty of room for interpretation. You pick from a choice of seven noodles, anything from thick, chow fun rice noodles to pork wontons in thin wrappers, and toss in the mix roast pork, chicken, duck, or shrimp. The Americanized Hunan-style stir-fries are comparable to what you find at any other uptown chains, unlike the more regionally oriented and more spicily sauced food served in Chinatown. Stir-fries tend to be on the oily side, heavy on the sauce. Skip the doughy dumplings and instead get crispy scallion pancakes or a steaming bowl of Dan Dan noodles, thick chewy udon topped with pork and mushrooms in a thick, savory and slightly sweet brown sauce.Note
