Profile

Restaurateur Danny Abrams (the Red Cat, Smith's) opened his second Mermaid Inn on the Upper West Side in 2007, four years after his first New England-style fish shack concept docked in the East Village. Though there’s no backyard patio here like downtown, the spot still serves to a packed house come dinnertime, with a similar menu of unfussy seafood preparations served in a seaworthy space. Illustrations of fish and ships, as well as nautical maps, provide some thematic fodder, as do intriguing wall-mounted tea lights set behind magnifying glasses. For starters, the grand platter flaunts an eye-widening bounty of raw, ultra-fresh East and West Coast oysters and littleneck clams; cooked shrimp, mussels, and lobster knuckles, while an iceberg wedge drizzled with blue cheese dressing serves its retro purpose. The kitchen does best with simple preparations; Cooked mains like the monkfish topped with a pesto of pounded hazelnuts, garlic, grilled onions and chili is chewy, and the topping a bit too complicated. The lobster sandwich is the bestselling entrée for good reason: Luscious claw, knuckle and tail meat from Maine mixed with mayonnaise, lemon juice, celery, chives and cayenne pepper comes loaded in a grilled, buttered brioche bun. It’s a well-executed classic, sided with crispy fries seasoned generously with that East Coast essential, Old Bay.

The oysters was great, the service and the ambiance as well. Got a table in the back which is very nicely decorated. We had hanger steak was nicely cooked, could have used a bit more garlic butter, but the grilled salmon and the po-boy sandwich was just perfect. We had a great time and would love to go back!

Delicious, Though Chaotic

We had a very pleasant night at the Mermaid Inn. My partner got the shrimp cocktail and the calamari, I got the Idaho brook trout. Food was quite good, though there were a few bones in the fish and the shrimp cocktail was a bit overpriced for the quantity received. Drinks were perfect and most of the wait staff was entirely amenable. Atmosphere was lovely, if a bit loud in the front - though the wait staff should crack down on letting out-of-towners take pictures incessantly. However, the big issue of the night was with the hostess. She was a bit of a mess - telling me I was 15 minutes early (I was 5 minutes early), meanwhile giving up two perfectly good indoor tables to couples without reservations (we had one) because both parties were there (my party was 5 minutes late), which meant we waited around for a good 15-20 minutes. She really tried hard to get us to sit outside, when we didn't want to, to the point that she was nearly begging us to take the table (although we had clearly specified indoors).
