If you've never encountered Bolivian food, you can take a cue from the regulars at this sparsely decorated Latin American eatery in Woodside, Queens. Nearly every group of diners kicks off with a round of crisp Paceña lagers, followed by plates of meat-filled pies called salteñas; though esthetically unexciting, the oblong-shaped turnovers provide sweet smacks of cornmeal and egg, and ooze a hearty stew of either beef or chicken. In general, the cuisine of landlocked and indigenously populated Bolivia relies on potatoes, hominy, corn, and meat, all of which Mi Bolivia puts to good use. A simple chicken cutlet (pechuga de la plancha) is grilled to juiciness and spiced liberally with red and black pepper. One of the menu's lone vegetarian options, a plain hominy salad tossed with crumbled cheese, jalapeños and tomatoes, is most appealing with a spoonful or two of the tart, moderately spicy, and universally adored salsa verde.
