Almost lost among the jumble of East Williamsburg's pizzerias and donut shops, Mighty Diamond fairly successfully combats the cliché that vegetarian food is bland—mainly because it embraces Caribbean flavors. The place takes its name from the reggae band, and is decorated with bright reggae colors and a huge wall painting of an abstract lion, as if you'd stepped into a Cedric Im Brooks album cover. Best are entrees, like spicy jerk tofu "chicken" and a surprisingly toothsome curry that almost makes you forget you're biting into seitan. The biggest win is easily the "beefy" patty, which uses thinly sliced shiitake mushrooms, walnuts, and onion to emulate the texture of shredded beef, in a wonderfully flaky pastry shell. If only the side dishes got as much attention. Collard greens without the smokiness of ham or a suitable substitute come off as one-dimensional. Likewise, the chocolate rum cake is dense, dry, and entirely devoid of any rum flavor. Luckily, the cafeteria-style menu means you can avoid the misfires and load up your plate with the winners, something the health-conscious and eco-friendly clientele seem to appreciate. For hardcore vegans: Some dishes (like the jerk) include honey.
