Profile

Mike’s Coffee Shop is probably the rare restaurant equally beloved by Pratt kids, neighborhood old-timers, and hip-hop celebrities. The diner is a near-perfect example of the classic New York greasy spoon: dirt-cheap platters of basic breakfast foods and sandwiches, not unpleasantly brusque service, and completely no-frills décor. The food is better than it needs to be given the rabid fan base (on weekend mornings, it’s not uncommon to see a line around the corner). Fried chicken and waffles are excellent: crisp and juicy chicken on a magnificently fluffy base. A bacon cheeseburger rocks a flat patty, full of flavor. The restaurant is small (two tables, a few booths, and a long counter), and since fans are many, show up early, especially on Sundays when it gets hit hard by the post-church crowd.

Recommended Dishes

Fried chicken and waffles, $9.50; bacon cheeseburger deluxe, $7.75
