Mission Cafe’s laidback atmosphere is reminiscent of the San Francisco neighborhood from whence it takes its name. East Village locals fill the narrow line of tables, conversing over cups of cappuccino or taking advantage of complimentary Wi-Fi. A colorful chalkboard behind the counter delineates the omelettes, wraps, salads, and fresh-squeezed juices on offer. Healthy Frisco-style options are available, such as an avocado, sprout, and jack cheese sandwich on whole grain bread, or a granola plate topped with fruit and yogurt. Grilled red onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms add earthy flavor to quesadillas, served with a trio of sour cream, hot sauce, and guacamole thickened by tomato chunks. Panini sandwiches have thin, crispy bread accompanying combinations like prosciutto and mozzarella or salami and fontina. A small glass case behind the front counter holds pies and breakfast starches like bagels, scones, and fresh-baked muffins. Ice water is served in parfait glasses, an old-fashioned touch that’s in keeping with the worn wood floors and battered tin ceiling. Additional character comes from the wall art, provided by local artists, and available for purchase at Bohemian-friendly prices.
