Profile
Since 1992, Taco Taco has been sating Yorkville’s appetite for inexpensive Mexican fare, and after fifteen years, owners Nick Cervera and Lupe Elizalde expanded to the Lower East Side with an eccentrically accented outpost called Móle. But the complex Mexican sauce isn’t Móle’s raison d'être: Cervera just likes how it makes an apt melting-pot metaphor for New York City. His redesign of the former Win 49 space features exposed brick, Mexican Talavera tile, and a snug 25 seats, and Elizalde’s menu conforms to the one uptown, which covers familiar taquito-to-torta territory. More-ambitious specials include crepas con huitlacoche, mixiote (parchment-baked lamb shank), and the Yucatán specialty cochinita pibil (chile-marinated shredded pork, wrapped and baked in banana leaves). — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
After walking by many times finally tried it out late on a Saturday evening and were blow away with the prompt and friendly service, great menu selections and specials and neat dining room with decor and a special vibe. The fish tacos and "drunken" taquitos reminded us of food we got when we lived in San Diego. It was all accentuated with super fresh vegtables and ingrediants and with spice and flavour that a true Mexican restaurant should have. New Yorkers could be well educated by trying this little place. The "cash-only" option was a shock, but after several years living in NYC, we always carry cash due to so many places taking only cash. Highly recommended, and probably one of the best Mexican restaurants we have been to in all of NYC, and far better then so many other over-hyped places (Hells Kitchen or Mesa) that hardly even resemble Mexican food or home style ordinare's liek Rosa Mexicana.
i went sunday night with a friend. we had squash blossom mexican-style quesadillas, duck carnitas, and scallop tacos. my friend and i are small but big eaters in the way of the restaurant compadres we are, but i still had leftovers to last a day or so. (i am fresh out and headed back soon to restock.) the wee space isn't for everyone, but i thought it worked, mate. the cash only "feature" reminds me of philly, but what ya gonna do? it's not any more hassle than finding out your cabbie is one of the few left that don't take cards. frankly, good on them for dissing the credit card merchants. nope, not a hippie, not a commie - just see the sense that such a small space NOT pay credit card fees. oh, and don't sit at the bar on a cold day or if you have a cold. they've only got the one a/c unit for the whole space, and that's where it aims. bis später.
