In Manhattan or Brooklyn, a well-run, chef-driven kitchen might not rock the sauceboat. But when Mood unfurled in 2004 in a central Queens neighborhood limited to delis, pizzerias, bar-and-grills, and shashlik joints, it lured steak frites-deprived diners from miles around. Mood is an appealing local bistro, and a model one at that: intimate at the table and convivial at the bar, with a stylishly balconied layout and gently priced, dependably good chow. It’s a place that hums day and night with regulars, many of whom know chef Martin Forde’s fine-tuned menu by heart. This Irish-trained toque is playful, with a knack for seasoning — and his simple-sounding, generous dishes yield layers of flavor. Asian five-spice pepper tingles on baby back ribs and buttery phyllo dough distinguishes an egg roll-like mushroom “strudel.” For dessert, the house-made molten chocolate cake outperforms its menu description. Unlike its name, Mood has proved consistent, and has bettered the dining state of mind in Queens.

Besides the usual eggs Benedict, Mood’s prix-fixe Sunday brunch offers a filling breakfast “crêpe,” steak and eggs, and a vegetarian pick.
