Mudville 9, a down-home, downtown sports-bar-cum-restaurant, has been serving up a wealth of fine, greasy all-American bar food since 1977. Its dark-wood-and-linoleum décor could use a tune-up—the 13 flat-screen satellite TVs show where the decorative priorities lay—but Mudville’s tables and cozy booths are comfortable enough. It’s the kind of joint where you and the boys can scream obscenities at the televised umpire or break into a rousing chorus of “O Danny Boy”—the soundtrack never veers far from classic rock. The menu’s got favorite junk-food standards: Wings in an array of buffalo, BBQ, and specialty sauces; burgers of all varieties; ribs, wraps, and roasted chicken; and deep-fried everything. The salads—all romaine lettuce covered with unexpectedly fresh ingredients—provide a good counter to the higher-cal offerings. (The ribs are an exception; they’re cooked just right, meat falling off the bone, though they don’t have much flavor beyond the BBQ sauce they’re splashed with.)
