Stepping into this small storefront feels like entering someone’s parlor. Pillows adorn high-backed chairs around tables set with white doilies and fresh roses. Mardi Gras masks enliven exposed-brick walls, near a gracious mantel and green shutters that recall the Crescent City. The silverware looks like family heirlooms. The mistress of the parlor is Kathy Jenkins-Ewa, who serves homemade New Orleans meals with a degree of authenticity rarely encountered this far north. Gumbo is topped with a generous heap of crabmeat, the soup packing as much peppery kick as the customer desires. Crab cakes are available as appetizers or entrées, served in airy balls, light on filler, with a cayenne-spiked version of Creole favorite rémoulade on the side. Menus and specials change often, based around a core of shrimp, fish, and chicken entrées that come grilled, fried, barbecued, or blackened. The blackened catfish is plump fillets fried up in soya oil (a nod to healthier diets; there’s no bacon fat used here). Étouffée comes with jumbo shrimp, smothered in a savory blond roux flavored by white wine and scallions. Light jazz plays on the sound system. If it were zydeco instead, the illusion of a night in New Orleans would be complete.
