Profile

Hidden away in a closet-size stall in the back of the Essex Market, this tiny takeaway is a boon to healthy eaters and Japanese food lovers. Daily rotating fresh food usually includes a bento box, which generally contains a rice ball, marinated veggies, and maybe something special like a fried pumpkin cake. Sometimes the friendly proprietor makes sushi rolls from smoked salmon or mackerel, and occasionally vegan ones too — her stuffed inari (tofu skin) is another good bet. Japanese coleslaw, frequently available, is vibrant purple and delicious in its yuzu dressing. And hearty miso soups are a tasty, restorative option when available. A few items might be too out-there for Western palates, including an okra-based "stamina salad" with a gummy texture, and an extra-salty salted cod. American eaters might prefer the sandwiches, laced with avocado, veggies and vegan mayo, or pumpkin on brioche.
