Profile

Steps from the Lafayette subway exit, this American bistro has the feel of an old train station lounge. The marble-topped bar up front sits beneath a vaulted ceiling lit with Edison bulbs. In back, a tight semicircle of banquettes surrounds seating for 20. In between, Perry St. alum chef Tyler Kord turns out a short list of ambitious dishes from a tiny kitchen open to the peering eyes of the chic neighborhood crowd. Five appetizers and five entrees provide just enough choices to please most tastes. Soft chunks of beef tenderloin arrive simply over a hearty portion of braised cabbage. Seafood dishes are a bit more eclectic and creative; a curry-like puree of split peas pools under sautéed scallops, and the breaded cauliflower paired with poached cod could almost pass for hash browns. The true highlight, however, is the soft-boiled, then fried egg appetizer, a perfect marriage of buttery crunch and gooey moisture.

This place is such a nice find (if you can find the door!). Low key and all about the food. The ceviche special was amazing. But please don't miss the fried soft boil egg - it is too hard to describe - but fantastic! Service was nice, and a good beer selection - we'll be back!

Where to take your foodie Dad who's coming from out of town? No. 7 was a winner. The menu is great for two reasons: 1. everything we ordered was delicious (mozzarella and blackberries, poached cod, salmon, passion-almond cake), and 2. there are only 5 appetizers and 5 entrees plus a special or two. The chef here is one creative dude -- every single menu item seemed like an unusual combination of ingredients (cockles? spicy pumpkin seeds?), but the end result was total deliciousness. Even the bread was served with pickled cucumbers and an interesting white sauce. The service was pleasant and the ambience would make it a great romantic date as well, although the dress code is non-existent. Add a great wine list, and yay, No.7 was a roll of the dice I'm glad I made. Recommended.
