Only three small tables occupy this hole-in-the-wall, ambiance-free space crowded with boxes and soda crates. Diners happily squeeze in nightly for Oyishi's cheap, no-frills sushi. A welcome change from the nearby tourist haunts, Oyishi has a kaleidoscopic menu ranging from simple $5.25 salmon maki to three tiers of combo rolls: "Jumbo," "Special," and "Top Chef's Rolls." Keep in mind that while substantive and scrumptious, a single Dragon Roll with eel, crunch, cucumber, snow crab, and avocado is about the same price as bargain three-roll combo served with soup or salad. Japanese beers and sakes (hot or cold) are also a steal, at $3.50 apiece. Only sweet-potato tempura is a disappointment, arriving in thick, undercooked chip form, and it’s funny to be served miso in a plastic takeout container—a reminder of why many customers prefer not to dine in the restaurant.
