Though set just a few miles east of Flushing’s Chinatown, Queens’s leafy waterfront enclave of Douglaston has more in common with Jay Gatsby’s North Shore gold coast a couple of miles beyond. Dining options tend toward fancy trattorias and family bulgoki spots. Then there’s the ambitious, hard-to-classify P&B’s Seville which occupies the premises of a longtime diner (and has kept the Formica counter with swivel seats intact). The space has been warmed with tavern-like wood touches, and a dine-in lounge that’s appealingly cozy but the menu, although as broad as a diner’s, pursues creative bistro fare, not blue-plate specials and BLT's. Light but satisfying starters include a curry-dusted butternut squash soup and a seared ahi tuna salad lavished with avocado. Meat, a house specialty, entices carnivores with properly charred Angus beef burgers, penne in a long-simmered, earthy Bolognese ragu, and a popular bone-in ribeye. For the undecided, the steak and blue cheese salad, heaped with sirloin, is reassuringly green yet wickedly rich. This winning dish is a metaphor for the P&B’s experience: more than meets the eye.
