Profile

When the Palm was just a red-sauce hangout for neighborhood newspapermen (and a few Lois Lanes), one of the owners would run up the street to the butcher for steak if some Hearst biggies insisted on meat. Well, none of us is exactly in desperate need of carb-and-fat overload, but who can refuse the Palm’s sensational sirloin slab? What a shock: broccoli (in an ideal state of cooked-but-not-too) and cottage fries-chips, actually hot and well seasoned. Did I say huge? Everything is huge. "Our veal parmigiana hangs over the plate," boasts the waiter.

Food was very good, atmosphere mediocre. Not such a good value, but near the theatres. Go to Smith and Wollensky or another more interesting steakhouse for the same (over-the-top) price and a more memorable evening.

Worth the lunchtime food coma

I have been to The Palm more times than my arteries and I care to count. I always order the filet mignon, which is always great--juicy and tender and just the right temperature, whichever one you choose. (The cajun seasoning is a nice addition to it, too.) I always order the creamed spinach, which is always great. (How can you go wrong?) I generally order the caesar salad, which is a coronary waiting to happen, but I think that it is worth it. The only thing that I have had there that I have not not enjoyed is the shrimp bruno, which was oily and tasteless. Save room for dessert: the cheesecake will ruin your diet but make your day. (Well, if you can stay awake for the rest of the day. . .)
