Profile

Peasant is exactly right. From its stunningly backlit brick-walled kitchen that features only open-fire cooking to its incredibly appealing pan-Italian menu, chef-owner Frank De Carlo has reason to bust his buttons every night, and you have almost too many reasons to undo a couple of yours. I like the little bowl of sweet ricotta cheese served gratis to the rowdy food scholars in the house, and I'm also partial to the brick-oven-baked rabbit, stewed in cannellini beans with salty strips of pancetta, and the perfectly oval pizza bianca pooled with olive oil.

Extra

Thanks to some added soundproofing, you no longer need to shout to get your share of impeccably al dente pastas, and meltingly tender osso buco in a risotto-like nest of farro.

Recommended Dishes

To be brief: my friend and I dined at Peasant last night and the food was delicious, the service was attentive, polite, well-executed, and notable, and the atmosphere was impressive. There is nothing not to love about Peasant. The meal itself was perfectly prepared (we had the rabbit) and the dessert (bread pudding) left my dinner companion at a loss for words with its divine texture, taste, and visual appeal. The waitress knew her wines and what to recommend to accompany the meal. I can think of few places in the city that can compete with the overall dining experience I had last night. Excellent restaurant worthy of praise.

Simple fresh ingredients combined with cooking techniques proves less is more.

I had a wonderful dinner here. The service is BS free, professional and tentative. The food is fresh and flavorful. I had the tripe, the cuttle fish, and the gnocchi. All were cooked perfectly with explosive but balanced flavor. My wife had the beets salad which she loved and she had either a cornish hen or some kind of poultry like it i forget, (i had most of the 2 bottles of wine, please forgive my memory) but she loved it too. We had the Peach cobbler for dessert, it was very old world country like, really comforting. We had 2 bottles of Barbaresco, both combined under $90, Great value! I love the simple and fresh ingredients the chef uses in his cooking combined with his cooking techniques prove a masterful skill. i don't like the noise, its too loud but overall I highly recommend this restaurant. BTW i am a restauranteur highly critical of all restaurants including my own, but i really appreciate the effort applied with much success at Peasant. This is my most honest opinion.
