Despite boasting fourth-generation pie-maker bona fides and an impressive hand-built brick oven, Pete's poses no real threat to the Fifth Avenue red-sauce establishment. Its narrow space feels like a glossy Slope wine bar, and while it's outfitted like a proper Napolitano eatery, the glorified pie shack lineup doesn’t offer any evidence of mastery. When Pete's ventures beyond cheese and flour, results are mixed: a bitter beet salad and a loose, watery eggplant rolotini demand a bit more in the seasoning department, while a mushroom timbale is a lone standout. As for the pizza itself, Pete’s kitchen does avoid the floppy quality so common to the brick oven style by rolling thick crusts that make for big, dry bites topped by the usual meat, vegetable, and olive oil add-ons. These pies have all the right components in place, but like the rest of the menu, they lack the panache needed to distinguish them in a very crowded field.
