There'll always be a market for Barolos and Barbarescos, but Southern Italian wines (and foods) are certainly enjoying their moment, to judge by this breezy osteria whose cellar ventures deep into Campania, Puglia, Sardinia, and Sicily. The menu veers southward as well—a change of pace for chef-partner Patrick Nuti, sprung from the geographic confines of Tuscan Square to bake shrimp on Sicilian rock salt and adorn swordfish carpaccio with oranges and olives.

Petrosino has become one of the Top Italian Restaurants in Manhattan. Serving continental Italian cuisine, this cosy establishment provides the perfect atmosphere for dinner with friends or date. The service is supurb and prices very reasonable. Not to mention it has one of the most interesting wine lists in all of New York. I understand that they were rated "Very Good" by the NY Times 9/29/04, so for the next few months it's going to be very difficult to get a reservation. I strongly urge you to call ahead and if they're full, try their sister restaurant Canapa next door.

Just okay.

I've been there a few times since they first opened but went there recently and was not impressed. Everything seemed over cooked or not as tasty or fresh. The pasta was overcooked and the fish was so so. They have a nice selection of southern italian wine. Romatic spot. I will say that the staff is very accommodating and freindly. Would I go back and try it again, probably but not until I've tried other restaurants in that nieghborhood.
