The plastic, checkered tablecloths and autographed Lisa Kudrow headshot behind the counter don’t exactly evoke the Italy depicted in the sepia-toned stills lining the walls. But the Box’s signature cheeseless “marinara” slice does. Co-owner Mario Flotta picked up the recipe for the slow-cooked, garlic-flecked sauce in his mother’s kitchen in Naples—then perfected it at his since-shuttered pizzeria on Carmine Street before bringing it with him here in 2004. Served on a crispy crust, the spice-laden marinara and basil-heavy margherita almost redeem the plainer pies. But what’s really kept regulars stopping by for lunch or a late-night bite since 1957 is the spacious backyard garden. Decked with street lamps and potted plants, it’s a perfect spot to sip a miniature bottle of Chianti or a pint of Bud while escaping the throngs of the Village’s main drag.Recommended Dishes
