Profile

Staff speaking in animated Italian is an early indication that N28 is an authentic version of the Neapolitan corner pizza shop. Further evidence comes from the brick oven, afforded a room of its own and topped by a banner honoring the Napoli football club. This oven produces top-rate pies, with thin crusts that are crisp on the edges and chewy inside. Sear marks lend a subtle smoky flavor, accented by the mix of cherry and oak that fuels the fires. The signature pizza is the margherita reginella. Pools of olive oil, imported from Calabria, add a gloss to tangy crushed tomatoes, fresh basil leaves, and mozzarella di bufala. A richer option is the tartufo, an earthy combination of mushrooms, rosemary, and truffle oil. Small pies are round; larger versions come on rectangular trays. The restaurant’s main room is rustic, with brick walls painted tomato-soup red and worn wooden tables. On the back wall, you’ll spot a mosaic of “la smorfia,” the Neapolitan dream text used to guide lottery picks. The tiles show Italy as No. 1.

Just a block from the endless line of well-healed West Village royalty standing outside of Keste, N. 28 seems to get no respect. But they serve up VERY good, authentic pizza. Great ingredients, reasonable price. Well made pies. Decor and music so-so. 2 very nice Italian waitresses seemed genuinely flustered by all of 6 tables of diners. Sat there waiting thirsty for my second glass of wine while one of them fiddled with one of those silly computers for 3 minutes. But all in all, I'd rather breeze in here for great pizza and not deal with the fuss and crowds at some of the "top" places. Isn't that what pizza night should be about?

Ordered a pizza an hour before close yesterday, phone twice to ask where it was, was told it was 20 minutes away, then told almost there...it never came, when I called back a third time to enquire, there was no answer...would love to have rated the food for this delivery but cannot do so. Terrible service.
