Profile

This Dominican restaurant on a quiet street in Prospect Heights has been around for decades, but after a fire, it reopened under new management in 2012 with a remodeled interior that's both charming and unpretentious. The best menu items fall into the comfort-food category: pernil, or roasted pork shoulder, that's teased apart and served with gravy and a piece of crispy skin on top; and mondongo, tender pieces of tripe in a rich tomato broth. While the cooking isn't perfect — the garlic shrimp's underseasoned and the oxtail's undercooked — the dishes can both be saved by slathering them in housemade sauces, like a jalapeño and habanero hot sauce, and the mojo, a slightly piquant garlic sauce. Make sure to top off your meal with a glass of jugo de avena: a creamy, refreshing drink made of oats soaked in lemon juice that are then blended and strained.

Recommended Dishes

Pernil $10, mondongo $7, jugo de avena $3.50
