Dark-wood interiors and intimate booths set the scene at this UWS Japanese spot. The word raku–meaning comfort or relief–refers to a style of traditional pottery used in the tea ceremony, the apogee of Japanese hospitality. Things aren’t nearly as formal here; the menu spans sushi standards and teriyaki entrees. Attentive servers help diners navigate the expected offerings of teriyakis, tempuras, and stir-fries. The specialty roll offerings are extensive: creative concoctions such as the gimmicky-named Nemo roll (thankfully free of clownfish) and the angry blue crab roll, flash fried and stuffed with spicy crab, tender fish, and rice the texture of risotto.
