Profile

This venue is closed.

As the crow flies, you’re less than three miles from Brooklyn’s Chinatown in Sunset Park, where for less money, you can feast on a diverse intensity of flavors that puts most corner Chinese joints, including this one, to shame. And yet, Red Hot sits in Park Slope, on the tame side of the ethnic-food divide, where the simple offering of fresh, rather than canned, vegetables functions as a mark of distinction. In this way, Red Hot bests many of its nearby competitors; a mango-chicken special is piled with slices of real fruit, while sautéed black mushrooms, crisp snow peas, silky stems of bai choy, and fragrant (if soggy) eggplant round out the vegetarian-friendly menu. Often, dishes are drowned in gloopy, pallid sauces, and meats are cooked to uniform rubberiness, with the tender spareribs a welcome exception. The restaurant itself is clean and pleasantly decorated; a small good-luck shrine hangs over the door to the kitchen, and specials are hand-written on posters and hung along the minimally decorated walls. If you live within delivery range, it’s not a terrible choice; otherwise, why not venture south?

Recommended Dishes
