Despite the folksy name, this tiny storefront on the cusp of Carroll Gardens offers genuine Spanish tapas. These uncomplicated snacks—marinated olives and tuna-stuffed pequillo peppers—are more akin to what you’d find in Madrid as opposed to many of the overwrought (and overpriced) creations called tapas in NYC. The skinny, red-accented room contains nine bar stools and five square tables along the opposite wall. Imported Spanish provisions grace shelves near the entrance and are available for purchase. The menu is brief enough that most of the dishes listed can also be viewed firsthand in clear domed containers on the bar. A classic wedge of tortilla Española doesn’t disappoint—the slices of potato meld into the eggy base, creating a dense custard with golden edges. Diners can compose a meat and cheese plate from four choices in each category. Meaty, appropriately fat-ringed slices of jamón serrano are requisite, as is the hoofed pig’s leg on display. Narrow slabs of membrillo, sweet quince paste, are the perfect foil for salty, crumbly triangles of aged Manchego. Practically everything pairs well with a crisp Albariño, and after a few sips you might even forget you’re a block from the BQE.
