Rêve has a lot going for it: a wide, wraparound corner setting good for seasonal outdoor idling, an intimate brick wall and creamy tile interior set off by swaths of burgundy and goldenrod drapery, and lots of tall windows for people watching Second Avenue's traffic stream. The food is simple, straight-forward Italian fare—largely grilled or seared fish, Italian-influenced appetizers, and up to eight rotating pasta dishes. While the food is prepared respectfully, it often lacks verve. Marinated octopus is tender and bracingly vinegary, but pan-seared duck breast with wild rice and orange herb chutney tastes mostly of oranges, and the duck could use a good searing. Sole with baby artichokes is a pleasant lemony rush, but most dishes seem to need something more, considering the prices, even in this neighborhood. Service can be too speedy, with plates arriving one on top of the other; the wine list is forgettable. With a number of Italian-style trattoria with more refined settings and more focused menus within a few blocks, Rêve has yet to become a first-choice destination.

Recommended Dishes

Octopus with fennel and endive, $9; sole with baby artichokes, $18
