Profile

This venue is closed.

The photograph on River's back wall says it all: a simple riverboat house made of bamboo and tin, floating along through calmly undulating reeds. It's not a rich man's boat, to be sure, but the picture speaks of pre-modern simplicity and comfort, a welcome respite for Zen-inspired yuppies to take a break from the hustle-bustle shopping taking place in every direction on the Upper West Side. Designed with that photo in mind—a bamboo canopy, fishing nets, and even a faux façade of a simple house on one wall—River also is true to traditional Vietnamese and Thai flavors. While staples like pad thai and satay chicken shine as basics (and are served simply, with little garnish), the real standouts are the specialty dishes. Marinated in honey, garlic, ginger, and lemongrass, the charcoal-grilled pork chop is tender and flavorful, as is the River special shrimp dish, which is served Vietnamese style with black pepper and a caramel sauce. The coconut milk-based Thai curries are sharply spicy, but you can cool down with a glass of Thai iced tea on the side. There's a separate built-out bar area, where you can indulge in fruity drinks, but River isn't really a drinking destination—even in the evenings the bar is seldom packed.
