This Sheepshead Bay legend, founded in 1970 by Buddy Lamonica, is the flagship of what has become an exemplary fast-food chain. The staff, bedecked in brown seventies-style uniforms, serves up burgers and gravy-soaked turkey and roast-beef sandwiches on freshly baked Kaiser rolls. Lines of patrons grab tables in the cafeterialike space or take the food to go. Thin-crust pizzas are the sleeper hit, and sandwiches taste best with specialty sides of sweet corn fritters, or fries topped with hot Cheez Whiz. After all, as a sign reminds customers, “You can have cheez on anything you pleez.”
Recommended DishesRoll-n-Roaster turkey sandwich, $4.95; fries-n-cheez, $2.95; corn fritters, $3.25; lemonade, $2.75
