Profile

It’s no surprise that the milkshakes and the yogurt smoothies at this Chelsea Market outpost of the Columbia County dairy farm are so good. But now that the place has counter seating and a bona fide kitchen, they’re joined by a contemporary take on a coffee-shop menu that incorporates the farm’s products with some of the region’s best artisanal ingredients. Pine Hill farm eggs are cooked with asparagus, herbs, and Ronnybrook farmer’s cheese; local peaches combine with toasted pistachios and Sprout Creek Ouray cheese in a watercress salad. Best of all might be expertly constructed sandwiches like the one with roasted D’Artagnan chicken, Grafton Cheddar, avocado, and bacon on a Sullivan St. Bakery flauto, anointed with spicy aïoli and accompanied by an herb-smattered toss of mixed greens.

How to ruin a perfectly good day with a sandwhich

We had such high hopes as we entered this establishment - promises of culinary delight from various people ringing in our ears. We were greeted by a sloth-like surly counter person who languidly rang up my collegue for a sandwhich. When he was done, I stated my order, only to be met with a blank look of confusion. Then he left. I ordered from a girl who looked like she was recovering from the drawn-out death of three pets. (I should not have been surprised by this as I had been in there once before and had been ignored for 15 minutes, for no apparent reason). What about the food? My friend's sandwhich was missing half of the promised ingredients, and it cost $9.00. I was given a choice between only 2 types of bread. The sourdough I selected had the handfeel of a scouring-pad. The chicken salad content of my sandwhich was - well chicken and mayo...... where was the promised apple? and the parsley? no-where I tell you! So sad.... In short - I have had better sandwhiches from a British-Rail Platform -snackbar at midnight. For $9??
