While Royal’s chicken is pressure-fried on the premises, it’s breaded in a generic flour-and-spice mix that does it no special favors. The breaded crust has a nicely warm patina of grease, though the actual flesh can be unflaggingly dry. Other menu items—from shrimp to burgers—go straight from freezer bag to fryer. The best side is the petite four-inch sweet-potato pie, which has a subtle brown-sugar-flavored filling that highlights the sweet-potato flavor. Its dense and flaky crust holds on far better than the batter on the fried chicken, which falls away in chunks with every bite. Royal’s apparently loyal customers, however, appreciate the unpretentious menu and speedy takeout and order-in services. In-house dining isn’t promising: It’s a grungy fast-food landscape of cheap Formica banquettes, colorful posters of much better looking versions of the food served, and worn tiles that don’t invite loitering.
