Profile

Kids love Vietnamese food, especially the delicate angel-hair noodle dishes and the grilled pork chops on the bone. There's no décor to speak of here, except for the fake banana and coconut trees, but the restaurant offers a quick meal of intricately seasoned dishes including steamed vegetable dumplings and summer rolls filled with shrimp, sprouts, and mint. Popular noodle dishes, such as the stir fried Bun Xao with shredded vegetables and your choice of meat are big enough for two. La Sa Tom, the addictive curry shrimp soup with coconut milk, comes in small and large sizes and is packed with plump shrimp. You can also share, or hoard for yourself, a host of authentic meat, seafood, and vegetarian main plates, as well as Grandma's Sweet Rice Dumplings, a not-to-be-missed dessert of soft, coconut-flavored dough wrapped around a crunchy peanut center.

Food is not authentic and the staff is rude beyond belief. Save yourself the grief and skip this restaurant.

How did this place get such a great reputation?

Normally, I am not one to be mean-spirited, but this pathetic so-called "Vietnamese" restaurant has gotta rate at the very bottom of my gastronomic experiences. The food, if you can call it that, was a sad attempt at distinction using a bland Cantonese fast food formula. As one who has traveled extensively throughout South-East Asia, I found NOTHING at the Saigon Grill to remind me of anything Vietnamese. Their copious use of peanut sauce and coconut meat makes a mockery of true SEA Cuisine. BTW, I'm not posting the above as a way of hurting the owners for their treatment of their employees; the fact is...this place is a fraud, as are most so-called Vietnamese restaurants in the USA. It’s just that I expected better from the UWS!
