Owner Samalita has fashioned this homey, happy-go-lucky Mexican restaurant with recipes and remnants drawn from her California childhood. Offerings exhibit a typical West Coast taste for fresh, health-conscious ingredients, and an unusually large number of vegetarian options coexist alongside mildly spiced, meaty mainstays like quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, and fajitas. — Kate Appleton

My girlfriend and I absolutely adore this restaurant. The staff are always friendly and the service is excellent. The Californian themed style is reflected perfectly in the menu. Instead of bread, they serve carrots and celery with a fantastic mustard dipping sauce which shows the Californian health conscious style to the menu. I tried practically everything on the menu and I was never disappointed.
During the summer they have large foldable doors that they leave open to let the breeze and fresh air in. It feels like being out on a terrace, not inside a restaurant.
I consider this my go to restaurant for the area. The food is consistent and the service is excellent. Prices are fair. It is my favorite secret restaurant. I feel it would have much more attention if it were on second avenue, but being on first reduces the crowds. I am so happy I found this place.
Good news. Samalita's is one of my favorite restaurants and it has re-opened on the corner of 1st Ave and East 87th St. in Manhattan. Their phone number is 212-289-7322. You must try the braised short ribs and also order the amazing fresh California guacamole. Fantastic!
