If you’re wondering why your ground-floor apartment doesn’t have a walk-in closet, it’s because a business like this one has co-opted the space to open a tiny takeout eatery or some such implausible enterprise. The cramped quarters of Sariwa (“fresh” in Tagalog) boggle the mind. This Filipino fast-food joint occupies less real estate than most gritty alleyways, but the bright-orange pit stop still manages to be a respectable delivery joint for empanadas (a nod to Spanish occupation); Lumpiang Shanghai (the Philippines’ answer to China’s spring rolls); and pancit, a rice-noodle dish that’s easily the most flavorful item on the menu. The two cooks on hand aren’t exactly making magic in the kitchenette, but their skill at navigating around each other as they work the deep fryers, the wok, and the register will earn your respect as you grab grub to go.
