A slice of Bavaria in Bay Ridge, Schnitzel Haus makes up for the lack of an outdoor beer garden with a long list of German imports, dirndl-clad waitresses, and live music. Just don’t expect to be serenaded by an Oompah band—Jimmy Buffett covers are far more likely to bounce off of the knotty pine walls and decorative steins. Escaping generous portions is futile; luckily, the rib-sticking cuisine is exemplary. The bone-in hofbrauhaus–style pork shank is pure meatiness encased in crackling skin, the richness cut by tangy sauerkraut and beer-spiked gravy. And why limit a meal to one measly weisswurst or bauernwurst when there’s a glorious sampler of five sausages, complete with mashed potatoes, red cabbage, and sauerkraut? Unusually, it’s not all old world in outer Brooklyn—a rare vegetarian platter is a Teutonic anomaly on the menu.
