Profile

This Balinese spot from the owners of Van Leeuwen may seem like an odd addition to their artisanal-ice-cream mini-empire, but Australian co-owner Laura O’Neill was inspired after several trips to Bali by its unique mix of Indian and Thai. The white tin ceiling extends down the walls, and the small space includes only nine tables for two. (During warm months, nine additional seats are available outside.) On weekends, a coffee counter features Toby’s Estate and an egg-heavy brunch menu. The dinner fare starts with deviled eggs and prawn crackers with three sambals (papaya-chili-shallot-lime, tomato-chili-shallot, and shallot-kaffir-lemongrass-chili). Entrees range from the classic egg-topped fried rice (nasi goreng) and tasty, tender beef curry (rendang), to a market fish curry and tamarind-glazed tempeh. Van Leeuwen’s usual ice-cream flavors are joined here by an exclusive sticky black rice flavor. It’s texturally interesting, but less satisfying than the signature and always-delicious Earl Grey flavor.
